ANAHEIM : Carolers Will Ask for Food for Needy

Share

Dozens of Anaheim police officers will be out prowling the streets Sunday hoping to catch residents with the goods. Canned goods, that is.

The officers will be joined by members of the Anaheim Fire Department, representatives from the Salvation Army and community volunteers in the ninth annual Caroling for Cans food drive. More than 150 people are expected to participate, riding in decorated squad cars, fire trucks and other vehicles through several city neighborhoods.

“It’s a way to have some fun and get in the holiday mood,” said Anaheim Police Sgt. Tom O’Donnell. “It’s neat to see that, yes, there is Christmas cheer with people doing good things for other people.”

The carolers will start the day at 10 a.m. decorating the police cars and fire trucks at police headquarters.

“We’re a pretty festive group,” O’Donnell said. “We get everyone from teen-agers to bankers helping out.”

About 1 p.m., the group will divide into four caravans and head out to four different neighborhoods to sing.

“Last year, we collected 15 tons of canned foods,” O’Donnell said. “It’s the main thrust of our efforts to make sure others have a good holiday.”
