In December, 1932, the Huntington Beach City Council received a petition signed by a number of angry residents who lived in the area of Yorktown and Hampshire avenues.
The residents objected to the odor coming from a garlic grinding plant and unsanitary conditions existing in and around the pepper drying plants.
At the time, Huntington Beach was a small farm town.
The account is part of a historical journal of past City Council meetings compiled by current City Clerk Connie Brockway.
At the same 1932 meeting, the council appropriated $100 for the Christmas Fund sponsored by the city’s volunteer Fire Department.
