Man Shot After Shoving CHP Officer : Crime: Bicyclist is hit in the leg reportedly after jumping a fence and fleeing into an Anaheim neighborhood.

Police shot an Orange man in the leg early Sunday after he allegedly shoved a California Highway Patrol officer and tried to flee into a residential neighborhood, authorities said.

Michael D. McCartt, 34, was taken to the UCI Medical Center for treatment, Anaheim police said.

A CHP officer saw McCartt riding a bicycle on an Orange Freeway off-ramp near Ball Road about 6:30 a.m. After the officer tried to stop McCartt to ask him questions, McCartt allegedly pushed the officer, jumped over a fence and ran into a residential area, Sgt. Thomas Lehman said.

After a 10-minute pursuit, Anaheim police found McCartt in the back yard of a home on the 2700 block of East Norm Place. After a police officer shot McCartt in the left leg, he was arrested on suspicion of possession of dangerous drugs and resisting arrest. Anaheim police would not give the name of the officer involved or say why the officer shot the suspect.

Residents of the sedate, secluded area said they were awakened by a gunshot early Sunday morning but did not hear anyone run through their back yards or see McCartt before police fired at him.

Anaheim police did not release information on the drug or drugs that were found on McCartt. The shooting is under investigation by the Orange County district attorney’s office and the Anaheim Police Department.
