A man who died Sunday after jumping naked from a second-story hotel balcony and then running from police was identified by investigators Monday as Gregory Lee Jensen, 37, of Cypress.
The cause of his death is unknown, pending toxicological tests, Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Martini said. “There was a number of conditions suggesting that he may have been under the influence,” Martini said. “His behavior was quite bizarre.”
Officers said they saw him standing naked on the balcony of Friendship Beach Inn in the 18100 block of Beach Boulevard about 4:30 p.m. Sunday. After they ordered him several times to return to the hotel room, Jensen jumped off the balcony onto a parked car, crushing its roof and shattering the rear window, police said.
Jensen then ran west on Beach Boulevard, police said. Officers chased him across the street and used pepper spray in an attempt to restrain him. The spray had little effect on Jensen, who continued running, Martini said.
Jensen finally fell to one knee on the sidewalk, where officers pinned him and handcuffed him. Paramedics arrived and noticed that he was having trouble breathing and took him to Huntington Beach Medical Center, where he later died.
Jensen was registered as a guest at the Friendship Beach Inn, according to police. Neither he nor the hotel would say when he checked in or whether he was alone.
