INS Agent Shoots Himself in the Leg
A federal immigration officer accidentally shot himself in the leg Tuesday at the target range, authorities said.
The Los Angeles-based Immigration and Naturalization Service agent, whose identity was withheld by authorities, was wounded in the upper leg while holstering his 9-millimeter handgun during routine training, said INS spokesman Rico Cabrera.
The agent, assigned to the deportation branch, was treated at Huntington Beach Medical Center and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
“He’s fine,” Cabrera said.
The agent was among a group of INS officers shooting at a range owned by the Huntington Beach police officers’ union when the accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m.
Huntington Beach police were not investigating the incident, said Police Lt. Chuck R. Poe.
