IRVINE: Russian Literature Collection Received

The UC Irvine libraries recently received one of the most comprehensive privately held collections of Russian literature in English and Russian translations, according to university officials.

The collection of 3,000 books are a gift from Ellendea Proffer, head of Ardis Publishers in Laguna Beach, the largest publisher of Russian literature outside Russia. Ardis played a pivotal role in publishing banned Soviet writers during the Cold War.

The collection, to be used by the UCI Program in Russian, also includes rare first editions. UCI officials say they will share access to the collection with other nearby universities.

COSTA MESA: Course to Trace Native Americans

The history of Native American cultures will be examined in a spring semester course starting Jan. 18 at Orange Coast College.

Anthropology 102 will cover the time before Europeans came to the New World, explore conflicts generated by European immigration and study Native Americans in contemporary society.

One section of the class will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and the other section will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays. The college is at 2701 Fairview Road in Costa Mesa.

IRVINE / TUSTIN: County Employees to Get English, Math Aid

Three community colleges and nine businesses in Irvine and Tustin were recently awarded a $3.4-million, three-year federal grant to help county employees who have limited English and math skills.

Irvine Valley College, Orange Coast College and Rancho Santiago College will join with nine companies to create centers for work force training, which will offer 10-week programs for employees. Faculty will create and teach a job-related curriculum.

The program is funded by the federal Department of Education’s National Workplace Literacy Program.

COSTA MESA: Applications Accepted to London Art School

Applications are being accepted by the Orange Coast College Art Department for a study program at London’s Royal College of Art, which was founded in 1837.

Study topics will include animation, computer imaging, drawing, graphic design, holography, printmaking, interior design, painting, photography, sculpture and art history.

Fees are $3,399 for a three-week program, $4,739 for six weeks and $5,999 for nine weeks. The prices include air fare, meals, lodging and tuition. Sessions will be from June 17 through Aug. 18.
