COSTA MESA — A 53-year-old woman escaped from the city jail early Saturday, about two hours after she was arrested on a traffic violation and subsequently was found to have outstanding burglary and drug warrants, authorities said.
Betty Jane Willis of Santa Ana slipped out a door in the back of the jail, said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Alan Kent.
“She walked through a door that was left ajar,” Kent said.
Willis was arrested shortly after midnight at Bay Street and Newport Boulevard for driving with a suspended license and providing false information, Kent said. Police then discovered the woman had three outstanding warrants--two for burglary and one for possession of narcotics paraphernalia, he said.
Police are seeking help in capturing Willis and asked that anyone with information call Costa Mesa police at (714) 754-5280.
