SIMI VALLEY : Vacant Discount Store to Be Razed

Share

Owners of an earthquake-damaged Pic ‘N’ Save, which neighbors have complained about since the Jan. 17 temblor, have decided to tear down the crumbling Simi Valley discount store.

In a letter to the city dated Dec. 19, Mark J. Ellis, director of construction and store planning for Pic ‘N’ Save, said demolition is scheduled for early January.

“We will begin demolition after the first of the year,” Ellis wrote. “I will be finalizing bids in the next few weeks so we can start the project early in the year.”

The Pic ‘N’ Save and a neighboring building that housed a Sears store on Tapo Street have stood vacant since the quake, attracting transients and vandals.

In September, residents who live near the stores signed a petition asking the city to force the owners to repair or replace the buildings.

The City Council set a deadline of one year after the quake for work to begin on repairing or removing the buildings.

The owners of the Sears store property have not yet announced their plans for the building.
