Pepperdine Rally Falls Short, 61-58

Pepperdine overcame a 13-point second-half deficit before faltering in the last 1 1/2 minutes of a 61-58 loss to San Diego State on Thursday night.

“We dug ourselves a big hole and scratched back but could not get over the top,” said Pepperdine Coach Tony Fuller. “We had an opportunity to take the lead but failed to capitalize on our chance.”

Pepperdine (2-7) trailed, 46-33, with 9:54 to play after Dion Gray made a free throw to cap a 7-0 run by San Diego State.

But Gerald Brown, who scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half, scored eight during a 10-1 run that pulled the Waves to within 47-43 and made a three-point basket that tied the score at 54-54 with 3:03 to play.

San Diego State (5-3) took the lead for good, 57-56, with 1:05 to play on a free throw by Marc Carter, who led the Aztecs with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

San Diego State missed three of six free throws in the last 12 seconds but twice retained possession with offensive rebounds.
