LOS ANGELES : Charter School Takes 1st Step to Regain Status

Share

Edutrain Charter School has taken the first step toward court action aimed at regaining its status and funding by filing legal documents with Los Angeles Unified School District.

One of 10 independent schools in Los Angeles, it began educating dropouts at its Downtown campus in July, 1993. Its charter was revoked Dec. 5 by the school board, which cited concerns about attendance and financial accounting procedures.

But the petition for a writ of mandate released Thursday, to be filed in Superior Court next week, maintains that the board acted without adequate proof that those problems had not been addressed.

“The governing board of LAUSD had no evidence and made no specific findings to justify revocation,” the petition states.

Winston Doby, president of Edutrain’s board of governors, said the school will ask that its funding be restored pending a court ruling on the school’s future.

The legal papers indicate that Edutrain cannot meet its current payroll--due Dec. 31--and because of layoffs and attrition, has four teachers instructing more than 200 students.
