SOUTH-CENTRAL : Comments on College Expansion Sought

Share

City officials are seeking comments from residents on a proposal by Mt. St. Mary’s College to build a library and classroom building on its Chester Place campus that is opposed by neighborhood preservationists.

At a Monday hearing, college officials and students testified that the new building is needed because of increased enrollment at the 900-student women’s college. Members of preservation groups argued that the project would damage the campus’ historical setting.

Hearing officers from the city’s planning and zoning departments said they will review comments from the public before deciding whether to grant a conditional use permit and zoning variance for the project.

The college plans to build the 59,000-square-foot complex at the 23rd Street end of its 15-acre campus on Chester Place between 23rd Street and West Adams Boulevard west of South Figueroa Street.

The deadline for submitting comments to the Planning Department for the project’s conditional use permit has passed, but citizens can still send written comments to the office of the zoning administrator. To build the complex, the college will need zoning variances for off-site parking and a reduced side yard setback.
