SOUTH LOS ANGELES : 7 Pastors to Speak on Kwanzaa Principles

Share

Pastors from seven churches representing five denominations will each give sermons Wednesday about one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.

“This particular celebration of Kwanzaa is geared to the religious community,” said the Rev. M. Andrew Robinson-Gaither, senior pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, which will hold events on three of the seven days of Kwanzaa. Families are encouraged to observe the remainder of the holiday at home.

Kwanzaa, which means “first fruit of the harvest” in Swahili, was created in 1966 by Cal State L.A. professor Maulana (Ron) Karenga as an Afrocentric alternative to the Christmas season.

Faith United, 1713 W. 108th St., will begin its celebration with a poetry recital Monday. Tuesday will feature music, dance, a candle-light ceremony and food. All events are free and begin at 7 p.m. African attire is encouraged at all celebrations.

On the third day, the preachers will speak about unity, self-determination, responsibility, family, purpose, creativity and faith--the principles of Kwanzaa.

“The principles are so universal that they cross all lines that divide,” Robinson-Gaither said. “This model of Kwanzaa is shaped to reflect our Christian experience and to make it acceptable to the African American church.”
