Art: Tiles Tell History of Compton

Share

A Venice artist’s ceramic tile panels depicting the cultural history of Compton were installed last week to decorate the Metro Blue Line’s Compton station.

Artist Eva Cockcroft designed the ceramic tile panels and two columns illustrating the city’s diverse cultures, including Native American, Spanish, Mestizo, Samoan and African American.

“Ms. Cockcroft’s work is a fine example of how MTA’s rail art projects are reflecting the spirit of the communities served by the Metro Blue Line,” said County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke.

The panels were installed along with a large mural, also depicting cultural diversity, created by a team of 11 students from Compton’s three high schools and directed by Cockcroft.
