Re “LAPD Lingo,” Dec. 19:
Not only is duis pronounced deuce it is also spelled deuce. This term comes from a shortening of the former Vehicle Code section, “502,” which stated the offense of driving under the influence from 1935 until 1959. (The offense is presently stated in Vehicle Code section 23152.) As in a game of cards, the two becomes a deuce. “DUI” is simply the abbreviation for “driving under the influence.”
