Spotlight on achievers

Myldred Jones

Activist, Los Alamitos

Jones founded the Casa Youth Shelter, a temporary shelter for runaway teen-agers, in 1978, when she was 69. Over the years, she has received numerous awards, including Humanitarian of the Year, American Red Cross Volunteer of the Year, California Law Auxiliary Clara Award and a Presidential Recognition Award for community service from former President Ronald Reagan.

County and city officials attended her recent 85th birthday celebration, and the Los Alamitos City Council issued a proclamation honoring her. She is also the founder of Share Our Selves, which provides food to indigent families.

Elizabeth Jean Rogers

Writer, Yorba Linda

In her first book, Create Your Own Joy, published by Llewellyn Publications, Rogers uses guided imagery and self-help exercises to help readers set goals and take action to achieve those goals.

“After much searching, it dawned on me that my thoughts create my emotions, and I create my thoughts,” Rogers said. “Decide what you want to create, then form thoughts that will support you instead of defeat you.”

Timothy Quinn

Resort manager, Newport Beach

Quinn was recently promoted to general manager of the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marina. He was previously marine facilities manager. He takes over the post from his wife, Anne, who left the job to have a baby. She will return as manager of the sales, marketing and activities divisions. Quinn, a former real estate sales administrator, helped increase slip occupancy at Newport Dunes from 70% to 95%. In his new post, he will oversee policy decisions and the resort’s 140 employees.

David Khalaf

Student, Tustin

A junior at Foothill High School in the Tustin Unified School District, Khalaf received the Ralph Alexander award during the California Scholastic Press Assn. annual journalism workshop recently at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

The award is named after the founder of the press group, which has been sponsoring the annual workshop for the past 43 years.

Khalaf was one of 27 high school students across the state who were selected based on excellent work as campus journalists.

Shirley Rice

Bus driver, Irvine Unified School District

After 18 years and 200,000 miles as a bus driver, Shirley Rice was recently named Pacific Region Driver of the Year for her accident-free driving record by Ryder Transportation Services.
