FULLERTON : Police to Continue Three-Day Workweek

Share

Police have been given the go-ahead to continue working three 12 1/2-hour days per week and an additional 10-hour day each month.

The Police Department has been trying the new work schedule for nine months and last week overwhelmingly recommended keeping it.

An evaluation of the schedule concluded that police favored it and that the city saved money in overtime pay. It also reported an increase in morale and a faster response time to emergency calls.

Officers reported that the work schedule reduces commuting time, allows them to buy homes farther away from the station and gives them more time to spend with their families, study and enjoy hobbies.

“We are really enjoying it,” Lt. Tony Hernandez said. “The officers work the 12 1/2-hour days and then choose how they will put in the other 10 hours.”

The officers can either work the 10 hours or deduct the hours from their vacation or compensation time, Hernandez said.
