BREAKING PAR: Beautiful, green golf courses don’t always please environmentalists. The Audubon Society of New York state has started a national campaign to make golf course owners environmentally more sensitive. . . . It’s offering certificates to owners who submit plans to upgrade environmental conditions--improve water use, conserve natural resources or build wildlife habitats. . . . Four golf courses in Orange County--Dove Canyon, El Niguel, Mesa Verde and Pelican Hill--have applied for certificates.

NIGHT GOLF? Some golfers will admit an addiction to the game. But can they take it 24 hours a day? The new 24-hour Golf Channel--co-founded by Arnold Palmer--is scheduled to be launched in a few weeks. It will carry some tournaments, instruction, and any golf news you might have to have at 4 in the morning. . . . For now, in Orange County, Dimension Cable, one of its investors, expects to carry it soon. The Golf Channel is also negotiating a contract with Comcast Cable, another investor.

AIR SUCCESS: The National Assn. of Women Business Owners will hear from John Wayne Airport Director Janice Mittermeier at its dinner meeting tonight. For one, members want to learn about the airport’s business operations. . . . But also, says group spokeswoman Jean Gardner, “it’s always nice to hear success stories from women who have made it. And she certainly has.” The dinner is at the Irvine Marriott hotel, $34 at the door.

Tonight at 7, you can do your dog a huge favor, for no more than $13. . . . Take your dog to the county’s animal shelter in Orange, where the Southern California Veterinary Medical Assn. will provide a rabies inoculation ($4) and a six-in-one shot ($9). It’s been vaccinating dogs the first Tuesday of each month. . . . In February, it will add low-cost shots for cats too.
