LONG BEACH : Civic Light Opera Raises $490,000 in Donations

Officials of the financially troubled Long Beach Civic Light Opera have raised $490,000 to qualify for a matching grant from the City Council, said J. Phillip Keene, general manager.

The council agreed in September to give the organization $490,000 in cash and other subsidies if the Civic Light Opera raised an equal amount from private donors.

“We’re thankful for the city’s assistance,” Keene said. “We’re now on track.”

Keene credited other organizations with making sizable donations, including a two-year $100,000 grant from the Knight-Ridder Foundation and a onetime grant of $35,000 from the Texaco Foundation.

The Civic Light Opera had postponed its fall productions because of financial problems. The opera will open its new season at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Terrace Theater with a production of the musical “Can-Can.” Preview performances are scheduled at 8 tonight and Friday.
