THOUSAND OAKS : City OKs 18-Inch TV Satellite Dishes

Deciding that new 18-inch satellite dishes are too small to be blights on the landscape, the Thousand Oaks City Council voted unanimously to loosen requirements for the high-tech dishes.

If dishes 18 inches in diameter and smaller are not visible from public streets and not mounted on roofs, residents may install them without getting a special permit, officials said Tuesday.

Additionally, the antenna for the device must not be taller than six feet, according to the ordinance.

Despite their size, the dishes cost about $1,200 and are high-powered enough to bring in about 150 TV channels, said Circuit City salesman Richard Decker.

Decker brought one of the dishes to Tuesday night’s council meeting, holding it above his head with one hand to demonstrate its small size.

“See, it is smaller than a garbage can lid,” he said.

City officials said sales figures from around the area indicate high demand for the expensive devices. One local retailer sells one or two of the dishes daily.
