Fred Johnigan scored five points in the last 1:01, including a three-point play with 21 seconds to play, and Mississippi upset third-ranked and road-weary Arkansas, 76-71, on Wednesday night in a Southeastern Conference opener at Oxford, Miss.
Johnigan’s last basket and free throw came after Corey Beck’s three-point basket with 33 seconds to play pulled the Razorbacks within 73-71.
Mississippi (4-5), which had lost its last three games, took the lead with a 14-3 first-half run and led at halftime, 36-33.
Arkansas (11-2), which had won 11 in a row since a season-opening loss to Massachusetts, won the Rainbow Classic last week in Honolulu.
“The Hawaii trip may have taken its toll on us,” Coach Nolan Richardson said. “That’s the only thing that I can think of to explain our sluggish play.”
