A 1920 advertisement by the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce listed a variety of reasons to settle in the area:

* “The best still-water bathing on the coast. The finest climate in California.”

* “The best fishing on the coast.”

* “The best industrial locations and the greatest undeveloped harbor assets between the Canadian border and Lower California.”

* “Municipally-owned gas system.”

The advertisement included a map showing such long-gone landmarks as the glass factory on Newport Boulevard and the town of Harper, just north of Newport Beach.
