SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Maybe Jefferson figured that the best way to beat Jordan was to put the teams’ two best scorers against each other.

Only problem is, Jordan has Clem Breedlove, and the senior guard loves an old-fashioned mano-y-mano shootout.

Breedlove scored nine of his game-high 46 points in overtime as Jordan outlasted Jefferson, 102-94, in a Southeastern Conference game Wednesday.

“I felt I had to outscore (Stevie Williams) because he was having such a good game for Jefferson,” said Breedlove, who leads the area in scoring at 30 points a game.

“I rushed my shots in the first half but I was more patient in the second half.”

Breedlove, who made eight of 14 free throws, connected on three of four in overtime, including two to end the game.

Guard Termell Goss, who scored 18 points, also came up big in overtime with two steals and six points.

“I had to step up my play on both ends of the court,” Goss said.

Breedlove, who scored 24 points in the second half and 14 in the fourth quarter, hit a three-pointer with 1:50 left in regulation that gave Jordan a seemingly safe 84-80 lead.

But Jefferson scored the final four points of the fourth quarter and tied the score at 86-86 on a short jumpshot in the lane by Ken Morgan.

“We didn’t play very good defense,” Jordan Coach Ed Kamiyama said. “We have problems against smaller teams because they are better suited to break our full-court press than the bigger teams that we are used to playing. But this team wants to win so much that they didn’t give up.”

Williams and Jefferson’s Keith Word didn’t quit, either. Williams led the Democrats with 33 points and Word, who added 23 points, gave Jefferson its last lead at 70-69 on a pair of free throws with 4:43 remaining in the fourth quarter.

“I should have stepped up more,” Williams said. “It doesn’t matter how many points I scored. . . . I would rather have scored zero and won.”

Lawrence Lowe had 16 points for Jefferson and Carlos Cabada added 18 points for Jordan.
