Robert Marquis; Architect Designed Low-Priced Housing

Robert Marquis, 67, a San Francisco architect recognized for his appealing designs of moderate- and low-priced housing. Marquis and his firm, Marquis Associates, which opened in 1974, received more than 70 design awards during his four-decade career. The California Council of the American Institute of Architects gave Marquis its 20 Year Award in 1989 for his work on a moderately priced apartment complex that was built in 1963 and remains a model for community design. He was also praised for a 1985 San Francisco project transforming standard public housing into an attractive apartment complex for the elderly. A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Marquis moved to Los Angeles with his family when he was 10. He studied architecture at USC and the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence, Italy.
