Penn State’s Carter Among 17 Turning Pro

With Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter among the latest additions, the number of undergraduates deciding to turn pro rather than finish their college eligibility reached 17 Monday.

A fourth-year junior in eligibility, Carter is due to graduate in June. He was runner-up in the Heisman Trophy balloting.

Carter was among five players who declared themselves eligible for the NFL draft, two days before the Wednesday deadline. The others were tailback Curtis Johnson and defensive tackle Greg Black of North Carolina, cornerback Ty Law of Michigan and defensive back Bobby Taylor of Notre Dame.

Chris Tormey, defensive coordinator at Washington, was named football coach at Idaho, succeeding John L. Smith, who took the coach’s job at Utah State.

Boxing

With 20,000 mourners lining the route to the cemetery, and some chanting, “Hit him again, champ,” former middleweight champion Carlos Monzon was buried in his hometown of Santa Fe, Argentina.

Monzon, 52, was killed Sunday when the car he was driving ran off a country road and overturned several times, throwing him and two passengers. One passenger was killed and the other injured.

George Foreman was named male athlete of the year by the Associated Press. At 45, Foreman became the oldest heavyweight champion in history by knocking out Michael Moorer in the 10th round Nov. 5.

Jurisprudence

A North Carolina man charged with killing Michael Jordan’s father said he helped dispose of James Jordan’s body after his friend shot him, according to a statement he gave police.

The statement was introduced during a hearing to suppress it. Attorneys for Larry Martin Demery sought to have the statement thrown out, but it had to be in the record before being ruled upon.

Demery, 19, and Daniel Andre Green, 20, are charged with capital murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in the July 22, 1993, slaying.

Annabel Ellwood, a 16-year-old Australian making her WTA Tour debut, upset fourth-seeded Ginger Helgeson-Nielsen of the United States, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of the Tasmanian Open at Hobart, Australia. . . . Third-seeded Thomas Muster was upset by Jamie Morgan, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round of the New South Wales Open at Sydney, Australia.

Romario, one of the forwards who led Brazil to the World Cup soccer championship, will move from Barcelona to Flamengo as soon as the transfer fee, reportedly as much as $7 million, is deposited.

Jesse Magana (12-4-2) stopped Rudy Zavala (24-5-2) in the fifth round of their scheduled 10-round featherweight bout at the Forum. . . .
