LA MIRADA : City Starts Voluntary Recycling Program
The city is launching a voluntary recycling program for businesses and industries to help meet 1995 state environmental mandates.
Participating companies must meet with city trash haulers, who will develop a recycling plan based on the types of materials that the businesses regularly discard. If a market, for example, discards a great deal of cardboard and a minimal amount of office paper, only the cardboard will be collected, said Bryan Boeskin, the city’s recycling coordinator.
“It’s very different than the residential program, where you throw everything in,” Boeskin said.
La Mirada and other cities are required by state law to recycle 25% of their trash by mid-1995 and 50% of their trash by 2000. The city currently recycles 15% to 18% of its trash. Officials said businesses generate about 62% of the city’s trash.
The business recycling program should be in place in about two months, Welch said. A voluntary curbside pickup program for residents is being implemented this month.
