The Texas Rangers declined to offer a contract to former All-Star pitcher Kevin Brown, a restricted free agent who was 22-21 with a 4.11 earned-run average over the last two seasons.

Boxing

Vinny Pazienza dominated from start to finish in defeating 43-year-old Roberto Duran in a super middleweight fight, scoring a unanimous decision after 12 rounds at Atlantic City, N.J.

Duran (94-11) appeared exhausted midway through the fight. The only damage Pazienza (40-5) suffered came in the final 15 seconds when he aggravated a rib injury. He is 9-0 since coming back from a severe neck injury he suffered in a 1991 car accident.

In a preliminary fight, Hector (Macho) Camacho stopped Todd Foster, a 1988 Olympian, in the fifth round for the vacant International Boxing Council welterweight title. Camacho, 146, improved to 49-3. Foster, 146 1/4, dropped to 33-4.

Football

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, choosing Kevin Gilbride, the Houston Oiler assistant best known for being punched by Buddy Ryan on national television.

Michael Westbrook, the Colorado receiver who caught Kordell Stewart’s “Hail Mary” throw as time expired to beat Michigan earlier this season, grabbed California quarterback Dave Barr’s 26-yard pass with four seconds left to lift the West to a 30-28 victory over the East in the 70th East-West Shrine game at rain-soaked Stanford Stadium.

James Scott, a Chicago Bear receiver from 1976-82, got 10 years probation and avoided prison on an attempted murder conviction for shooting another motorist on a Dallas freeway last March when a jury could not agree on sentencing. State District Judge Harold Entz assessed probation after a plea agreement among Scott, the victim Jerry Durand and prosecutors.

Police in Kirkland, Wash., interviewed Seattle Seahawk Mike Frier in his hospital bed for the first time since a car accident left him paralyzed. But the investigation into who was driving when teammate Lamar Smith’s car smashed into a telephone pole on Dec. 1 could continue for weeks, they said. Running back Chris Warren was also in the car and was arrested the night of the accident. Smith said the next day he had been driving.

Patrick McEnroe got some advice in a phone call from his older brother, John, then went out and beat Richard Fromberg, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), to win his first ATP singles title in the New South Wales Open in Sydney, Australia.

In the women’s final, Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina repeated her Virginia Slims Championship victory over Lindsay Davenport, defeating the top-seeded American, 6-3, 6-4, in 70 minutes.
