A summary of selected Los Angeles City Hall actions last week that affect the Westside.

CITY COUNCIL

* PET ADOPTION--Approved an ordinance authorizing the Animal Regulations Department to allow animals whose owners are in jail to become available for adoption after 30 days in a city kennel. Under the old law, the city was required to keep an animal during the length of its owner’s incarceration. In one case, a dachshund whose owner was in prison was kept in a kennel more than three years. In discussing the need for a change, Meyer Levine of the Animal Regulations Department said: “Just because the owner is incarcerated doesn’t mean the animal should be confined also.”

* LOT FOR SALE--Authorized the public auction of a 4,913-square-foot city-owned vacant lot at 1747 Beverly Glen Blvd. The auction will take place March 3 in Room 250A at City Hall, with the minimum bid set at $40,000. The steeply sloped parcel, in the Bel Air-Beverly Crest area, is considered unsuitable for a dwelling.

HOW THEY VOTED

* CRUISE SHIP GAMBLING--Approved a policy supporting proposed state and federal legislation that would permit gambling on cruises between California ports as long as the gambling was considered an incidental part of the cruise. Supporters of the legislation argued it would help keep local-based cruises competitive with those from elsewhere that offer gambling. Councilman Nate Holden was against the policy, saying: “Keep the gambling in Las Vegas.” Passed 10-3. Voting yes: John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Jackie Goldberg. Voting no: Marvin Braude, Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas.
