HAWAIIAN GARDENS : Plan to Sell Alcohol Kills Gas Station Project

Share

The City Council has killed a plan by Union Oil Co. of California to modernize a gas station at a busy intersection because the proposal included a store in which beer and wine would have been sold.

Unocal planned to invest $800,000 in its station at the northeast corner of Carson Street and Pioneer Boulevard, installing computerized gas dispensers and replacing the existing garage with a small convenience store.

But local residents and the owner of an adjacent liquor store strongly objected, saying the city already had too many places where alcohol is sold.

Although the Planning Commission endorsed the project on a 3-2 vote, the City Council voted unanimously last week to deny the necessary permits.
