WOODLAND HILLS : Boys & Girls Club Plans Honors
The West Valley Boys & Girls Club, which opened Tuesday after six years of planning, will hold a $150-a-plate fund-raising dinner on Valentine’s Day to honor those who played major roles in making the program a reality.
“This is our very first fund-raiser event, and we thought it was appropriate to honor those people who were most instrumental in establishing a Boys & Girls Club in the West San Fernando Valley,” said Robert Gross, who helped form the club.
The four to be honored are Robert Voit, president of the Voit Companies, who introduced the idea of a club in 1989; Roger Greaves, chairman and president of Health Net in Warner Center; Mark Slavkin, president of the Los Angeles Board of Education, and City Councilwoman Laura Chick.
The club is on the campus of Calvert Street Elementary School. It offers recreational and educational programs, as well as music and arts and crafts programs, Gross said.
Families pay $15 a year for a child to participate. They pay $12.50 for a second child and $10 for a third child. Scholarship programs are available for needy children, said Greg Holden, executive director of the club.
Programs are open to children ages 6 to 12, Gross said. Officials hope to eventually open the facility to youths up to age 18.
The fund-raiser is scheduled for Feb. 14 at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel. For reservations and information call 340-3561.
