Westminster to Buy 3 Gas- Powered Vans for Worker Car- Pools

Share

Three vans powered by natural gas will soon be added to the city’s fleet of vehicles.

The City Council last week accepted a bid from Moss Brothers Dodge to provide the vans at a cost of about $29,000 each. Bid requests were sent to eight car dealers, but the only response came from Moss Brothers Dodge, a San Bernardino dealership, officials said.

Jeff Howell, the city’s fleet superintendent, said in a report to the council that money from Measure M, the voter- approved half- cent tax to improve county transportation, will pay for the purchases. The Orange County Transportation Authority has already released $83,000 of the $92,400 budgeted for the vehicles, he said.

In addition, the city will receive $5,250 from the gas company’s incentive fund to encourage the use of natural gas- powered vehicles, Howell said.

Deputy City Manager Don Vestal said the vehicles will help reduce pollution and enable the city to meet state air quality requirements. The vans will be used for employee car- pooling, he said.
