$800,000 Slated for College Arts Center

With virtually no discussion, trustees of the Ventura County Community College District agreed to spend more than $800,000 on amenities for the performing arts center under construction at Moorpark College.
The money for the $9-million project is coming from a state community college capital improvement fund. The 400-seat complex is scheduled to open this spring, with the first production to be staged in late June.
“It is an absolutely gorgeous building, and inside it’s going to be even nicer,” said acting chancellor James W. Walker.
The three contracts approved Tuesday are for seating, lighting and theatrical rigging.
Meanwhile, trustees rejected bids on projects at the district’s two other campuses. Bids for the long-planned letters and science building at Oxnard College and a math and science building at Ventura College were rejected because the low bids exceed available funds.
“If we do not get a lower bid, the board has to decide to change the scope or come up with the (additional) money,” Walker said.
Requests for new bids will be sent out in coming weeks, he said.
