SANTA ANA : 1 Killed, 1 Wounded in Shooting
A suspected gang confrontation near the Civic Center on Tuesday left one boy dead and another person wounded, police said.
Nelson Pineda, 16, was shot in the head while walking in the 400 block of East Civic Center Boulevard and died at a nearby hospital, according to Sgt. Don Robertson. His companion, Hector Rangel, 20, was shot in the upper torso and was undergoing surgery.
About 2:44 p.m., Pineda, Rangel and several of their friends, all identified as active gang members, were walking along Civic Center when they were confronted by members of a rival gang, Robertson said. One of the rival gang members fired several rounds at Pineda and his friends.
Paramedics found the mortally wounded Pineda at the scene of the shooting, and Rangel several blocks away.
Members of the police gang unit responded to the scene, but no one has been arrested, Robertson said.
