The city of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Police Department has agreed to pay a former officer $165,000 to settle a lawsuit stemming from her complaint that she was raped by a fellow officer.

Officials agreed Tuesday to compensate Suzanne Campbell, who was allegedly raped by a colleague on the grounds of the Police Academy, just before jurors were to return a verdict in the case.

Campbell said she was followed into a women’s restroom at the academy in 1990 and assaulted. The male officer accused of the rape was fired.

“Resolution of this lawsuit sends a powerful message that the LAPD must fulfill its legal obligation to provide a safe working environment for all its employees,” said Carol Sobel, Campbell’s lawyer and senior counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

During the trial, Campbell testified that she was sexually harassed repeatedly by male officers while on duty from the time she joined the force in 1987 until she left her patrol duties in 1992.
