SAFE HAVEN? A new survey ranks Glendale as the second-safest U. S. city. But Glendale cops aren’t so sure. . . . “City Crime Rankings,” published by Morgan Quitno Press, ranks Glendale behind No. 1 Huntington Beach. Using 1993 FBI crime statistics, the survey showed that Atlanta is the most dangerous of 355 metropolitan American areas. But Glendale police spokesman Chahe Keuroghelian said the ranking conflicts with his department’s analysis of the FBI stats, which ranked Glendale seventh safest among California cities. “I’m not a math whiz,” Keuroghelian said of the new ranking, “but it’s pleasantly surprising.”

TROUBLING MEMORY: It was 50 years ago today that Russian troops liberated Auschwitz, but Simon Korn still feels the Nazi boots on his back. . . . Like many other death camp survivors, the 71-year-old Studio City resident retains hellish memories of the Holocaust. Now, Valley survivors share their memories to educate a new generation (B1).

STALK MARKET: These deals grow on you. . . . Offering everything from celery to cappuccino, five farmers markets in the Valley area are drawing a bumper crop of customers, such as Arnold Knicker, above, at the Santa Clarita Farmers Market. One reason for the popularity: Produce can cost up to 30% less than at the supermarket. See Valley Life!, Page 10.

THAI OASIS: And the best Thai food eatery between Ventura Boulevard and San Francisco is . . . in Palmdale? This is no heat-induced hallucination. Critic Max Jacobson says the Nopgow restaurant serves big-time flavors often unseen outside Bangkok. See Valley Life!, Page 34.

PLAYER PUZZLE: Bill Kernan is picking up the pieces. . . . The Cal State Northridge baseball coach suffered his first losing season last year with the Matadors. But with a versatile new offense--including championship pitcher Rob Crabtree--Kernan hopes to assemble a winning team for 1995. “We still have to put the puzzle together,” he says.
