From Associated Press

Goaltending was their Achilles’ heel last season, which made it easy for Blaine Lacher to move into the Boston Bruin net.

His first NHL shutout and a 3-0 record that matches Boston’s makes it easier to stay there.

Lacher stopped 33 shots and Adam Oates took a pass from Cam McNeely and scored with 1:17 to play in overtime Thursday night to give the Bruins a 1-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Boston.

Detroit 5, Calgary 1--The Flames lost for the first time as the Red Wings celebrated Sergei Fedorov’s return at Detroit.

Fedorov, the NHL’s most valuable player last season, had one of Detroit’s three first-period goals. He missed the Red Wings’ first three games while serving a three-game suspension for a cross check on San Jose’s Jayson More in the playoffs last season.

Florida 4, Tampa Bay 2--Bob Kudelski scored twice in the Panthers’ four-goal first period at Miami, and they won for the first time.

Philadelphia 3, Hartford 2--Garry Galley and Mark Recchi scored goals late in the third period less than two minutes apart at Hartford to give the Flyers their first victory.
