Bob Bassen had two goals and five other Nordiques scored as Quebec remained undefeated with a 7-3 rout of the Sabres Friday night at Buffalo.

The loss was the first for the Sabres. Quebec’s seven goals more than doubled the number Buffalo gave up in its first three games. The Sabres had not given up seven goals since Oct. 9, 1993, in a 7-4 loss to Montreal.

Their 4-0 start is only the third in the franchise’s 28-year history and the best since they had a club-record 7-0 start in 1986-87.

Chicago 4, Toronto 1--Joe Murphy scored his third and fourth goals of the season and the Blackhawks won handily in their new Chicago home.

Chicago, generating more scoring chances on a larger ice surface, has scored nine goals in its first two games at the United Center. The Blackhawks played last season at Chicago Stadium.

Washington 5, N.Y. Islanders 2--Olaf Kolzig stopped 24 shots to earn his first NHL victory as the Capitals won their home opener at Landover, Md.
