Help From Teachers

In the Jan. 22 Opinion section, Michael Ventura (“Preparing for the Unknown”) noted that some Japanese schoolteachers had gone to search the rubble of Kobe in search of their students “to make sure the children had someone to care for them.” He added, “Can you imagine that sort of thing happening here?”

After the Northridge earthquake of last Jan. 17, the media noted that some teachers were present to assign studies to children who were not attending schools due to the closure out of concern for aftershocks and the potential of structural damage. I personally visited some homes to inform children and families when schools would reopen.

In answer to Ventura’s rhetorical question, “Yes, I can imagine it happening here.”
