LOS ANGELES : Minneapolis Woman Picked as Director of Libraries
The panel overseeing Los Angeles’ public libraries on Monday chose Minneapolis’ top librarian to head the mammoth system.
Susan Goldberg Kent, 50, director of the Minneapolis Public Library, is scheduled to start her new job on Feb. 27, pending the expected approval of the City Council. She was appointed to the $120,000-a-year post by the Los Angeles Board of Library Commissioners.
Kent will be responsible for running the recently renovated Central Library, 66 branch libraries and the bookmobile program. The library’s annual budget is $37.4 million.
Kent was deputy director of Tucson’s public library before moving to Minneapolis about five years ago. A native of New York, she holds a master’s degree from Columbia University. She succeeds Elizabeth Martinez, who resigned to become executive director of the American Library Assn.
