GOLF : Murphy Leads by 2 in Florida

With much of the attention focused on a mutton-chopped farmer from Texas, Bob Murphy moved to the top of the leader board with a five-under-par 66 Friday for a two-stroke lead in the Senior PGA Tour’s Royal Caribbean Classic at Key Biscayne, Fla.

Murphy, sinking four birdie putts on the front nine and two more on the back nine, leads Kermit Zarley, last year’s runner-up, Ray Floyd, Tom Wargo and Jack Kiefer.

Robert Landers, a struggling cattle farmer from Azle, Tex., survived a bogey on his first professional hole and scrambled out of six bunkers en route to a respectable 75 while playing with homemade clubs and in sneakers.

Landers had tied for sixth in a qualifying tournament after cashing an IRA for the $2,000 entry fee. His gallery of about 300 at the first tee Friday was by far the largest of the day.

“Just tell everybody I survived,” Landers said.
