HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Baker Cooking, Burbank Wins Title

Matt Baker hit three consecutive three-point baskets near the end of the third quarter to help Burbank High beat Canyon, 54-48, on Saturday night at Canyon, clinching the Bulldogs’ first Foothill League championship since 1987.

Baker finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Freshman Juni Williams added 16 points for Burbank (15-7, 9-1).

Greg Minor scored 31 points for Canyon (13-0, 6-5), including 24 in the first half.

Whittier Christian 56, Montclair Prep 50--The Mounties had their 12-game winning streak snapped while playing without point guard Akil Anderson, who had food poisoning, in a nonleague game at Montclair Prep.

Anwan Jones had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Mounties (20-4), who finished their regular-season schedule. Reed Berglund added 14 points and seven assists.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Buena 73, Dos Pueblos 27--Eboni Conley had 21 points, seven rebounds and eight steals for Buena (18-2, 12-0) in a Channel League game at Dos Pueblos.

La Reina 52, Carpinteria 39--Shane Anderson scored 17 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Regals (9-10, 6-2) in a Tri-Valley League game at La Reina.

Kindrea Cuccia added 13 points for La Reina.

Fillmore 68, Oak Park 49--Julie Arundell scored 10 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter for the Flashes (18-2, 7-1) in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.

Alisha Valavanis scored 19 points for the Eagles (13-8, 4-3).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Oak Park 2, Carpinteria 1--Colin McDonnell scored five minutes into the second overtime as the Eagles (10-4, 9-1) edged the Warriors in a Tri-Valley League match.

Saugus 1, Burroughs 1--Matt Gillis scored for the Centurions and Jesus Diaz answered for the Indians (13-3-6, 6-0-4) in a Foothill League match at Burroughs.

Burroughs goalie Gustavo Palomares made five saves and ran his unbeaten string to 13 matches.

Burbank 4, Canyon 1--Santiago Giangrasso and Rigo Iniguez each scored two goals and the Bulldogs (6-9-4, 2-5-3) beat the Cowboys (2-10-1, 2-4-1) in a Foothill League match at Canyon.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Canyon 4, Burbank 0--Kristi Giordano scored three goals and Krista Smith added another as the Cowboys (9-7-1, 6-3-1) maintained their third-place standing in the Foothill League.

Canyon, which played five games in six days this week, finished the stretch 2-2-1.

Chaminade 1, Notre Dame 0--Amanda Horn scored her fourth goal and the Eagles maintained their lead in the Mission League.
