OAK PARK : County to Lobby for ZIP Code for Area

Share

Somis has one. So does Oak View.

So why can’t Oak Park--which has a larger population than either of those jurisdictions--get its own ZIP code?

That is the question county Supervisor Frank Schillo wants to pose to federal postal officials. Schillo’s 2nd District includes Oak Park, a community of 15,000 that borders Los Angeles County.

At Schillo’s urging, the Board of Supervisors agreed to join U.S. Rep. Anthony Beilenson (D-Woodland Hills) in lobbying federal postal officials to get Oak Park its own ZIP code.

Oak Park currently shares a ZIP code with neighboring Agoura Hills, which is in Los Angeles County. As a result, Schillo said, the county loses some sales tax and motor vehicle registration revenue.

Residents also complain that they must constantly haggle with insurance companies that want to charge them more expensive Los Angeles County rates.

Postal officials have said they are reluctant to change the ZIP code because of the costs involved.
