BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Canyon Wins When Late Shot Fails

With two seconds left to play, Orange’s Holman Paz missed a shot that would have tied the score and Canyon went on to win, 46-44, in a Century League boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Canyon High school.

Tim Tynan made two crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter for host Canyon (11-14, 5-4). Adam Hoover led Orange (13-9, 3-5) with 12 points.

In other Century League games:

Santa Ana Valley 100, Foothill 66--Ike Harmon had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Olujimi Mann had 22 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and Michael Riggins added 18 points and eight assists for No. 6 Santa Ana Valley (17-7, 8-1), which set a school record for points. Don Almquist had 25 points for Foothill (12-12, 3-6).

Villa Park 59, El Modena 56--Mike Vogeding scored 14 points and Jason Hutson added 10 points and nine rebounds for visiting Villa Park (13-9, 4-5), which outscored El Modena, 21-13, in the fourth quarter.

Eric Chenowith added a game-high 15 rebounds. Ryan Whieldon led El Modena (13-9, 4-5) with 20 points.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 54, Century 41--Chad Boberg scored 20 points and Brett Boulton added 11 for No. 7 Cypress (20-4, 8-1). Gabriel Aguirre scored 13 points and Hector Beltran added 12 for Century (13-12, 3-6).

Katella 68, El Dorado 58--LaByron Clayton and Mike Pahl each scored 24 for Katella (20-3, 7-2). Darren Drennan scored 18 for El Dorado (17-8, 5-4).

Kennedy 59, Loara 45--Richie Bowen had 16 points and nine assists and Wade Murakami had 10 rebounds for Kennedy (8-18, 2-7).

In the Golden West League:

Servite 53, Santa Ana 48--David Downs scored a game-high 20 points for Servite (17-7, 7-2). Raul Martinez had 18 points and Ralph Jordan added 12 for Santa Ana (6-17, 1-8).

Tustin 62, Ocean View 46--David Lalazarian scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds and Doug Gottlieb scored 13 points and had 10 assists for No. 2 Tustin (23-1, 9-0).

Westminster 64, Saddleback 56--Scott Yoshizaki scored 18 points and Aaron Boorman added 13 points and nine rebounds for Westminster (9-15, 3-6).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 79, University 69--Down by 17 points in the third quarter, University (6-18, 2-7) rallied to within three in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans came up short. For Costa Mesa (8-17, 3-6), Terry Carmen scored 21 points and Mike Freeman added 20. Steve McKee scored 27 for University.

Estancia 68, Aliso Niguel 45--Chris Candlish scored 14 points and Dane Plock added 13, including three three-pointers, for No. 5 Estancia (22-3, 9-0). Tim Bragassa and Will Campbell had nine points apiece for host Aliso Niguel (7-17, 1-8).

Laguna Beach 49, Laguna Hills 46 (OT)--Brandon Bloch hit two free throws with four seconds left to send the game into overtime, and Laguna Beach outscored Laguna Hills, 5-2, in overtime.

Kurt Nelson led Laguna Beach (15-9, 8-1) with 14 points and Ryan Satrappe added 12. Mike Scaglione led Laguna Hills (12-8, 4-5) with 17 points.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 61, Corona del Mar 56--Amir Rahimi scored 18 points for Irvine (11-14, 5-4). Daryl Parker added 12 and Shawn Guinn had 11 for the Vaqueros.

For the Sea Kings, Brian Fracalosy scored 19 points and Dom DeGrazier had 13, including four three-pointers.

Santa Margarita 63, Newport Harbor 45--Allen Krist scored 22 points and J.C. Timmons added 13 points for visiting Santa Margarita (23-1, 9-0), which pulled away from a 31-30 halftime lead.

Woodbridge 73, El Toro 50--Chris Burgess scored 21 points and had 15 rebounds for host Woodbridge (16-9, 5-4).

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 66, Capistrano Valley 64--Blake Marston hit an 18-foot jumper with four seconds left to win it for visiting Dana Hills (10-13, 3-6). Marston led the Dolphins with 24 points and Donald Meyers added 19. Randy Shepard led Capistrano Valley (15-10, 4-5) with 14 points.

Mater Dei 68, Mission Viejo 45--Schea Cotton scored 27 points for the top-ranked Monarchs. Tyler Kalklosch scored 12 for Mission Viejo (14-9, 5-4).

Trabuco Hills 73, San Clemente 70--San Clemente almost upset eighth-ranked Trabuco Hills but bad free throw shooting in the fourth quarter insured the Mustangs victory. Jon Paisley had 25 points and Rob Warnick added 20 to lead Trabuco Hills (15-10, 6-3). Gabe Gardner had 18 points for San Clemente (9-16, 0-9).

In nonleague:

St. Margaret’s 79, La Canada Flintridge Prep 48--Bobby Baker scored 23 points, including five three-pointers, and Damian Raibon added 21 points for visiting St. Margaret’s (18-4).
