COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Concordia Men Roll, Defeat Fresno Pacific

Jeff Putnam scored 21 points and Craig Martin added 16 points and 10 rebounds in Concordia’s 83-76 victory over visiting Fresno Pacific in Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball Saturday night.

Concordia, which trailed, 45-43, at halftime, outscored Fresno Pacific, 40-31, in the second half and forced 20 turnovers. For Concordia (22-5, 6-4), Tarrik James scored 17 points, including three three-pointers, Pharoah Jones added 12 points and Danny Barajas 11 points, including three three-pointers. Fresno Pacific fell to 16-7, 6-4.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Chapman 95, Southwestern 63--Norman Coulter scored 11 points to lead Chapman (15-7). Jim Mayer had 18 points for Southwestern (15-11).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Concordia 66, Fresno Pacific 63--Camilla Jonzen and Michelle Kravik each scored 14 points for Concordia (16-10, 6-3). Janee Young had 27 points and 13 rebounds for Fresno Pacific (15-9, 7-2).

In nonconference baseball:

Long Beach State 3, USC 2--Tim Falsken’s one-out single in the second inning drove in Jason Minici with the go-ahead run for visiting Long Beach State (3-2).

In the Gavilan softball tournament:

Saddleback 9, San Diego City 6 (5, time limit)--Carly Girton and Christy Journell each went two for three with two RBIs to lead Saddleback (3-0) in pool play.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 16-8, Claremont Mudd 0-4--Krista Bon Willer gave up two hits in five innings for her first victory of the season for Chapman (2-0) in the second game. Lisa Cancilla had three hits, including two doubles, for the Panthers.

In the first game, Christy Guidorizzi gave up one hit and struck out five in three innings for the victory.

Concordia 10-11, Occidental 0-4--Catcher LaSandra Kellum hit a home run and drove in three runs and Dana Gall had two hits, including a double, for visiting Concordia (4-2). Lisa Lefebvre recorded victories in both games, improving to 4-1.

Southern California College 10-10, California Lutheran 4-1--Angie Vega was three for three with three runs scored and two RBIs for Southern California College (4-2) in the second game of a doubleheader.

Vega, a graduate from Savanna, had two RBIs and Shannon Moreno was four for four in the first game.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Redlands 7, Southern California College 2--Southern California College’s Mattias Johannson defeated Todd Born, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Ryan Lewis and Matthew Scott won, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8), at No. 2 doubles for the Vanguards (1-1) over Jason Oliver and Steen Lundblad.

Redlands is 2-0.

In men’s swimming:

UC Santa Barbara 122, UC Irvine 87--Freshman Rich Sarkisian took first place in two events, recording personal bests in the 200 butterfly (1:54.62) and 200 freestyle (1:43.82). The Anteaters finish the season 4-7.

In women’s swimming:

UC Santa Barbara 122, UC Irvine 80--Freshman Carrie Rowe took first in the 500 freestyle with a personal best 5:19.44 and freshman Amerie Nordberg finished first in the 200 breaststroke in a personal best 2:25.38.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Occidental College 7, Chapman 2--Occidental College’s Laura Krapa won her singles match, then teamed with Hillary Stamm and later with Shirley Hua for victories in doubles. Amy Wolfrum added a singles victory for Occidental.

Southern California College 5, Redlands 4--Quynh Le swept at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and teamed with Wendy Andel to sweep at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2, for visiting Southern California College (2-1). Redlands fell to 0-3.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--Leland Quinn had 18 kills and Chris Harger added 13 kills for host UC Irvine (3-2, 2-2), which lost, 15-6, 15-10, 15-7. Donny Harris had 19 kills for UC Santa Barbara (7-3, 5-2).
