Notes on a Scorecard - Feb. 13, 1995

Holy Bull’s career-ending injury in Florida on Saturday deprived him of a chance to earn a place among the great thoroughbreds of all time and Southern California fans of the opportunity to see him perform here. . . .

It would have been an exaggeration to rank Holy Bull among the best ever after his 3-year-old season. Remember, he finished up the track in the Kentucky Derby and didn’t run in the Preakness, Belmont or Breeders’ Cup Classic. . . .

However, he had looked terrific winning six consecutive races, and the absence of the 1994 horse of the year from the Santa Anita Handicap on March 11 will be devastating to the track. Not since Spectacular Bid in 1980 had the appearance of an eastern star in the Big ‘Cap been so eagerly anticipated. . . .

Jim Harrick showed he can be a motivator when he took his UCLA basketball team on a tour of the Kingdome, the site of this year’s Final Four, last week in Seattle. . . .

The Bruins responded with victories over Washington and Washington State, and freshman guard J.R. Henderson continued to show vast improvement. . . .

UCLA has an unusual--and tough--schedule ahead with games at Pauley Pavilion against Arizona State at 9 p.m. on Thursday and Arizona at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday. . . .

On Saturday and Sunday, 22 college basketball games were televised into L.A. . . .

The hottest team in the Eastern Conference at the NBA all-star break is the Boston Celtics, winners of three in a row. . . .

This is one time when Don Nelson might not get any coach-of-the-year votes. . . .

It figures that in a year when the Clippers are in the garden spot to get the first draft pick, there probably won’t be anything close to a franchise-maker available. . . .

Larry Smith had a good recruiting year at Missouri. . . .

The newest football coach in the Show Me state, Rich Brooks of the Rams, will need a good draft. . . .

The women’s events produced three of the most impressive performances at the Sunkist meet Saturday night. Jackie Joyner-Kersee ran the second fastest 50-meter hurdle race ever by an American; top-ranked 800-meter runner Maria Mutola of Mozambique won her 32nd consecutive race and Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa High set a mile record for high school sophomores. . . .

A miler to watch might be Micah Davis of Mead High in Spokane, Wash., who easily won the prep race in 4:18. . . .

Savoy Pictures has obtained the life rights to Vince Lombardi. . . .

Robert De Niro would be a natural to portray Lombardi. . . .

Celebrity Boxing Inc.’s first card at the Grand Olympic will feature junior-middleweights Yory Boy Campas and Cassius Clay Horne on Thursday, which was fight night during promoter Aileen Eaton’s reign. . . .

Riddick Bowe, who is training at the Palm Springs Boxing Club, weighs 253 pounds and expects to trim down to 240 for his fight against Herbie Hide on March 11 at Las Vegas. . . .

According to a survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations, 3,770,621 boys and 817,073 girls participated in prep sports in 1972-73. By 1993-94, the boys’ total had dipped to 3,478,530 and the girls’ had increased to 2,124,755. . . .

Sorry, Tim Brown, but I still don’t think Al Davis was responsible for the Raiders lining up offsides or mismanaging the clock. . . .

The Quebec Nordiques are 10-1--not bad for a second-place team. . . .

Believe it or not, the NHL season is at about the one-quarter mark. . . .

I wonder if Suns’ fans will stage a sit-down protest at halftime of the next game at Phoenix after Charles Barkley’s racist remarks.
