Ex-Prof. ‘Fran’ Potter Dead at 72

Francis (Fran) Potter, a retired Orange Coast College business law professor who taught at the school for 26 years, died Jan. 31 at her home in Las Vegas. She was 72.

Potter was born in Methuen, Mass. She attended Boston University and served for two years as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She also served during the Korean War.

She earned her associate in arts degree from Long Beach City College. At Cal State Long Beach, she received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in business education.

In 1958, Potter joined the OCC faculty as a business instructor. She transferred to Golden West College when it opened in 1966. She returned to the OCC campus three years later.

She served as president of Orange Coast’s Academic Senate, and was involved in the American Federation of Teachers. She retired in 1984.

A memorial scholarship in her name is being established at Orange Coast College. It will be awarded annually to female business students returning to school.
