HERMOSA BEACH : Rate for Downtown Parking to Double

Share

Parking rates for downtown meters will soon double to help pay for a $6-million face lift of the city’s downtown.

The price of parking will go up from 25 cents to 50 cents for each half-hour of parking under the plan approved unanimously by the City Council on Tuesday.

The city will also consider adding parking meters to some downtown areas that don’t have them.

The rate increases are expected to bring in about $800,000 each year to help fund the downtown work, which officials hope can begin in the next year. The work is expected to take at least four years.

Although Councilman J.R. Reviczky voted to approve the plan, he warned that parking rate increases in residential areas will draw many residents to council meetings to complain.

Plans for downtown call for doubling the width of some sidewalks to accommodate outdoor dining and closing a portion of Pier Avenue to eastbound traffic. Palm trees will be added, newspaper kiosks might be installed and lights might be strung canopy-style on part of Pier Avenue.
