Peter Jacobsen, the hottest player on the PGA Tour, defending champion Corey Pavin, 1993 PGA champion Paul Azinger, John Daly and 11 other former tournament champions head the field for the $1.2 million Nissan L.A. Open Feb. 19-26 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal withdrew because of toe surgery.

The United States will bid this summer in Helsingborg, Sweden, for soccer’s 1999 Women’s World Championship. The American women won the inaugural title in 1991 in China and will compete in this summer’s tournament, scheduled for June 5-18 in Sweden. . . . Upon the Olympic flame’s arrival in the United States from Greece, the torch relay--involving 10,000 runners over 15,000 miles--for the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta will resume on April 27 of next year in Los Angeles. No starting point is set, but the Coliseum is considered most likely.
