A Thousand Oaks man accused of chasing and shooting at his former girlfriend as she rode down the Ventura Freeway early Saturday was arrested shortly after the incident, authorities said.

Terry Maddox, 26, was arrested after shooting twice with a handgun at a car occupied by his former girlfriend Carrie Gates, 22, a male friend and Gates’ 16-year-old sister, said Sgt. Ray Nagel of the East County Sheriff’s Department.

The trio was returning home to Thousand Oaks at 1 a.m. after picking up Gates’ sister at Los Angeles International Airport when Gates noticed a pickup truck following them and recognized the driver as Maddox, police said.

As the cars neared Westlake Boulevard, Maddox pulled up alongside Gates’ car, shot twice over the roof and then pointed the gun directly at Gates, police said. No one was injured, and the car was not damaged, Nagel said.

Gates and her companions pulled off the freeway and called the police, who quickly apprehended Maddox on the Moorpark Freeway near Avenida De Los Arboles.

Maddox was booked into the East County Jail. Bail is set at $50,000.
