A 17-year-old student at Belmont High School suffered a gunshot wound in the chest Wednesday afternoon when he was confronted by a young man on a sidewalk in front of the school, officials said.
The student, who was not identified, was reported in serious condition at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. The assailant remains at large, police said. Investigators said it was not known whether the shooting was gang-related.
Augustin Herrera, principal of the school, said the shooting took place about 1:25 p.m., after the student was given a pass that excused him from class for the rest of the day.
