With Shaquille O’Neal serving a one-game suspension, Anfernee Hardaway moved center stage for the Orlando Magic on Sunday and delivered his most compelling performance of the season.

The All-Star guard’s breakaway dunk with less than a second remaining capped a career-high 39-point effort as the Magic rallied for a 105-103 victory over the Chicago Bulls at Orlando.

Hardaway picked up a loose ball near Chicago’s foul line and raced to the other end to score the winning points with seven-tenths of a second left on the clock.

Nick Anderson made the play possible, slapping the ball away from Chicago’s Toni Kukoc on an inbounds pass. Just before that, Kukoc broke free for a layup with 7.1 seconds left only to be denied what would have been a go-ahead basket because the Bulls’ Scottie Pippen called a timeout.

San Antonio 129, Golden State 99--David Robinson scored 30 points to lead a balanced attack for the Spurs at San Antonio, and Dennis Rodman grabbed 22 rebounds, including a franchise-record 15 in the third quarter. The Spurs out-rebounded the Warriors, 59-28, and set season marks for points, rebounds and margin of victory.

New York 104, Philadelphia 99--Patrick Ewing had 32 points, 18 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Knicks at New York, and Charles Oakley, returning to the lineup for the first time since dislocating a toe on Dec. 27, had seven points and nine rebounds. Ewing has now had four consecutive 30-point games.

Indiana 100, Dallas 92--Rik Smits scored 28 points and did not miss a shot after the first quarter at Indianapolis. Smits was 13 of 16 for the game, making all 10 of his shots in the final three quarters.

Minnesota 106, Miami 99--Isaiah Rider scored 38 points and Tom Gugliotta played an outstanding all-around game off the bench at Minneapolis. Gugliotta had 17 points, six rebounds and seven assists in only his third game with Minnesota.

Phoenix 103, Charlotte 92--Kevin Johnson scored or assisted for 20 consecutive points during the third quarter at Phoenix. Johnson had seven of his 14 assists in the third quarter, helping the Suns bolt from a 49-45 halftime lead to an 81-69 advantage.

Utah 110, Denver 96--Karl Malone scored 34 points and the Utah Jazz went almost the entire first period without missing a shot from the field at Denver.

NBA Notes

Maverick guard Jim Jackson says he expects his ankle injury to sideline him for the rest of this season, ending his consecutive start streak at 161 games. . . . The Philadelphia 76ers activated forward Clarence Weatherspoon and guard B.J. Tyler and placed guard Jeff Malone on the injured list.
